On our own sums, one person needs roughly 1,600 to 2,400 euro a month and a family of four from 4,400 euro. How the budget is built line by line, with sources and dates.
Spain is cheaper than most of Western Europe, but not cheap everywhere. Euronews, citing new Eurostat data (25 June 2026), put its overall price level about 9% below the EU average, yet rents in Madrid and Barcelona are among the highest in the country and rose 5.8% in the year to August 2026. This guide builds a monthly budget line by line, shows where every number comes from and says plainly which totals are our own arithmetic. Figures are as of October 2026 and indicative.
How to read the numbers
- Rents and living costs come from Numbeo, a crowd-sourced site (pages updated 15-19 October 2026), and from Idealista and enalquiler reports. Numbeo samples are small in some cities: Madrid 226 contributors, Valencia 138, Málaga 69, Alicante 53, Murcia only 15.
- Numbeo's estimate of monthly costs excluding rent is a modelled basket, and its page does not say exactly what it includes. We use it as one line and add health insurance separately.
- Totals are our own sum of the lines above, not a statistic. For scale: Spain's statistics office INE reported average spending of 14,066 euro per person in 2025 (published 25 June 2026), about 1,172 a month. That averages everyone, including owners and people sharing a home.
One person
Modest: a one-bedroom outside the centre in Alicante. - Rent: 744 euro (Numbeo, 18 October 2026). - Everything else except rent: 738 euro (Numbeo estimate for Alicante, same date). - Private health insurance: 94 euro, the lowest plan we found (Asisa international basic, 93.74 euro, a comparison site in 2026). - Our sum: 744 + 738 + 94 = 1,576 euro a month.
Comfortable: a one-bedroom in the centre of Madrid. - Rent: 1,338 euro (Numbeo, 19 October 2026). - Everything else except rent: 818 euro (Numbeo). - Private health insurance: 150 euro, our assumption inside the 50-350 euro a month that a comparison site reports for expats, depending on age. - Extra leisure: 78 euro, our pick of Numbeo's Madrid prices (gym 44.45, two cinema tickets 20, four beers 14); it may overlap with Numbeo's basket. - Our sum: 1,338 + 818 + 150 + 78 = 2,384 euro a month.
A couple
Two people share rent and some bills, so this is an upper bound: one rent plus twice the single lines. - Modest, Alicante: 744 + 2 x 738 + 2 x 94 = 2,408 euro. - Comfortable, Madrid: 1,338 + 2 x 818 + 2 x 150 + 2 x 78 = 3,430 euro.
In practice shared internet, utilities and a car push the real figure lower.
A family of four
Modest: a three-bedroom outside the centre in Alicante, state school. - Rent: 1,365 euro (Numbeo). - Everything else except rent: 2,690 euro (Numbeo estimate for a family of four). - Private health insurance: 4 x 94 = 375 euro, using the adult price for children, so probably too high. - Our sum: 1,365 + 2,690 + 375 = 4,430 euro. State schools charge no tuition, but canteen and materials cost extra and we found no reliable national figure.
Comfortable: a three-bedroom in central Madrid. - Rent: 2,457 euro (Numbeo). - Everything else except rent: 2,942 euro (Numbeo). - Private health insurance: 4 x 150 = 600 euro (our assumption). - Our sum: 2,457 + 2,942 + 600 = 5,999 euro, about 6,000. - International school for two children: Numbeo gives 15,950 euro a year per child in Madrid, so 2 x 15,950 / 12 = 2,658 euro a month. Numbeo does not say whether its family estimate already includes school fees, so treat this as an upper bound: 5,999 + 2,658 = 8,657 euro.
Rent decides the budget
- Madrid and Barcelona, the top tier. Idealista's July 2026 data put Madrid at 23.2 euro per m2 a month and Barcelona at 20.1, against a national 15.1 euro in August 2026, up 5.8% on a year (Spanish press reports of Idealista, 1 September 2026). Idealista changed its method in July 2026 and excluded seasonal lets, so compare with older figures carefully. enalquiler's September 2026 average rent per dwelling was 2,443 euro in Madrid and 2,314 euro in Barcelona, a different measure.
- Valencia and Málaga, the middle. Numbeo's one-bedroom in the centre: 1,271 and 1,316 euro. Idealista put Málaga at 16.4 euro per m2 in July 2026, and enalquiler at 1,750 euro a month in September.
- Alicante and Murcia, lower. Numbeo's one-bedroom in the centre: 898 and 686 euro, outside the centre 744 and 501. Murcia rests on 15 contributors, so treat it as a rough guide.
INE shows the regional gap in spending too: in 2025 average spending per person ranged from 12,197 euro a year in Andalucía (about 1,016 a month) to 16,124 in Madrid (about 1,344) and 16,642 in the Basque Country (about 1,387).
Cheaper than expected
- Eating out: an inexpensive restaurant meal is 15-17 euro in these cities, and in Madrid a draught beer is 3.50 and a cappuccino 2.74 (Numbeo).
- Phone and internet: mobile plans cost 10-17 euro and broadband 22-31 euro a month (Numbeo).
- Public transport: Numbeo's monthly passes run 24-35 euro. Official tariffs disagree between sources (Madrid zone A is reported at both 21.80 and 32.70 euro; Barcelona's T-usual at 22.80 euro for 2026), so check the transport operator before you budget.
Dearer than expected
- Rent growth: national rents rose 5.8% in the year to August 2026.
- Electricity: a standard household bill was 68 euro in June 2026 (Papernest), after VAT returned to 21% and the electricity tax to 5.11%, and 69 euro for 270 kWh in July (Tarifasgasluz); the two use different household profiles. Numbeo's basic utilities, which include heating and cooling, run 117-168 euro a month for 85 m2.
- International schools: 6,367 to 15,950 euro a year per child across these cities in Numbeo; guides put mid-range primary tuition at 12,000-18,000 euro and premium above 20,000. Add canteen, uniform and a place-reservation fee.
- Fuel: petrol is 1.51-1.63 euro a litre (Numbeo), and a car adds insurance, tax and parking.
Hidden and one-off costs
- Residence rules: the non-lucrative visa asks for proof of means of 400% of IPREM, about 2,400 euro a month (28,800 a year), plus 100% (600 euro) per dependant, according to law-firm pages that put the 2026 IPREM at 600 euro; consulates differ on how they count it. It also requires private health insurance. This is a minimum proof of means, not a living budget; see our non-lucrative visa guide.
- Public healthcare: after at least a year of registered residence, the special agreement costs 60 euro a month under 65 and 157 euro from 65, according to a law-firm page citing the Ministry of Health; confirm with the Ministry. Private cover for expats is commonly 50-350 euro a month depending on age (comparison sites).
- Rental deposits and agency fees: ask for them in writing before you pay.
- Moving, furniture and a first-month buffer.
If you own property
Add the owner's costs: property tax (IBI) of 0.4-1.1% of the cadastral value, community fees of about 30-150 euro a month, insurance and waste tax. See annual taxes and bills for owners, utilities and community fees, home insurance for non-resident owners and property prices and buying costs in Spain. FAQ
How much do I need per month to live in Spain? On our own sums, about 1,600 euro for one person in a mid-sized coastal city and about 2,400 in central Madrid, and from about 4,400 euro for a family of four with state school. These are not statistics.
Is Spain cheap in 2026? Euronews, citing Eurostat, reported prices about 9% below the EU average in June 2026, but large-city rents are high and rising.
Which city is the cheapest of those we checked? Murcia and Alicante had the lowest rents (see above), but their samples are small.
What this means for you
- Rent is the swing factor: moving from central Madrid to Alicante cut the single budget by about 800 euro in our sums.
- Budget health insurance as a separate line; it is the one people forget.
- For a family, state school versus international school is a difference of more than 2,000 euro a month.
- Treat these numbers as a starting point: Numbeo samples are small and change, so get quotes before you commit.
