Cyprus digital nomad visa: income requirement, quota and taxes

Cyprus · October 1, 2026

Cyprus's scheme runs on a capped annual quota, not open-ended approval — here's what the €3,500 income threshold, the quota and the tax-residency rules mean in practice.

Cyprus runs a digital nomad visa for remote workers and freelancers from outside the EU and EEA, separate from the Permanent Residency by investment route our other Cyprus articles cover — this one is income-based, not property-based, and runs on a capped annual quota rather than open-ended approval. Some specifics, especially the quota, have been revised more than once, so confirm the current position with a Cyprus immigration lawyer before you plan around them.

Income requirement

Applicants must show a stable net monthly income of at least €3,500, after taxes and contributions, from work for an employer registered outside Cyprus or from clients located outside Cyprus. Secondary sources report that the threshold rises for family: about 20% more for a spouse or partner and about 15% more for each minor child. Confirm the exact current figures with the Civil Registry and Migration Department or a lawyer.

The quota

The scheme launched in October 2021 with a cap of 100 permits, raised to 500 in March 2022. It was paused for a period and reopened in March 2025. Several recent sources report the annual cap was doubled to 1,000 permits in late 2025, with talk of loosening it further, but we could not confirm that from a primary government source, so check current availability. For scale, the Deputy Ministry of Migration reported 518 permits granted by the end of June 2025, plus 389 for family members. Timing still matters: check availability before committing to a relocation date.

Duration and renewal

The permit is issued for one year and can be renewed for two further years, for a maximum of around three years under the scheme before you'd need another residence basis if you want to stay longer. Sources put processing at roughly five to seven weeks, and government fees are reported to be modest, around €70 for the application plus a further €70 for the registration certificate per person. Check the current fee schedule.

Tax treatment

The standard 183-day rule applies: spend more than 183 days in Cyprus and you generally become a Cyprus tax resident, which brings your worldwide income into scope (subject to Cyprus's generally favourable non-dom regime for investment and dividend income, which our other Cyprus articles touch on). Cyprus also has a separate 60-day rule that can make you a tax resident with fewer days if you meet a set of conditions, including not spending more than 183 days in any other single country and maintaining a permanent home and business ties in Cyprus; check eligibility with a tax adviser. Tax rules on personal income were also changed for 2026, so get current advice rather than relying on older guides. Track your days carefully either way.

What you can't do on this visa

The visa permits remote work for non-Cyprus employers and clients — it doesn't authorise working for a Cyprus-based employer or taking on local clients. Family members who join you can live in Cyprus but are not permitted to take up employment or economic activity there.

Where this connects to property

Most digital nomad visa holders rent while they test out life on the island — Limassol and Paphos are the most common bases, both covered in our Cyprus best-areas article. Some who stay the full three years and like it end up exploring the €300k Permanent Residency by investment route as a way to stay longer term; that's a genuinely different, property-based process from this visa, covered in our other Cyprus articles.

FAQ

Is this the same as Permanent Residency by investment? No — PR by investment is a €300k+ property-based route to long-term residency; the digital nomad visa is income-based, temporary, and doesn't require buying anything. Is there really a cap on how many visas are issued? Yes — it was 500 a year and is reported to have been raised to 1,000 in late 2025; confirm current availability before planning around it. Do I pay Cyprus tax on my income? Only if you become a Cyprus tax resident, generally by spending more than 183 days a year there or by meeting the conditions of the 60-day rule. Can I work for a Cyprus company on this visa? No — it's for remote work for employers and clients outside Cyprus, and family members cannot work either.

How we help

We help digital nomad visa holders find the right rental while they settle in on the island, and if the move turns into a longer-term plan, walk through the property-based residency options that might make sense next. Informational only, not immigration or tax advice — quota availability, income thresholds and rules change; confirm current details with a Cyprus immigration lawyer before applying.
