Dominican Republic's emerging destinations in 2026: what official tourism data shows

Dominican Republic · October 21, 2026

According to CLIC Inmobiliaria's analysis of MITUR data, Cabo Rojo, Miches, Puerto Plata, Sosúa-Cabarete and Juan Dolio-Boca Chica show measurable structural change.

CLIC Inmobiliaria has reviewed data from the Dominican tourism ministry's (MITUR) Tourism Intelligence System, with a July 2026 cutoff, to define "emerging destination" by measurable change rather than marketing: new tourism infrastructure, occupancy jumps or visitor flows that did not exist three years ago. Annual figures are averages over monthly series, and 2026 figures cover only January–June, so the analysts stress that the signals need confirming with a full year of data. The earliest-stage zones are Pedernales/Cabo Rojo and Miches. The Cabo Rojo cruise port had no cruise passengers in 2022 and 2023, then 11,626 in 2024 and 176,690 in 2025, with 82,291 in the first half of 2026. Miches stayed at 335 hotel rooms for years, then reached 1,321 in 2025, almost four times more. CLIC notes that buyable real estate inventory in both places is still minimal, and describes them as the highest-risk, longest-horizon cases. The other three zones are further along. Puerto Plata handled about 2.2 million cruise passengers in 2025 (Taíno Bay 1,126,485 and Amber Cove 1,076,149), had 348,519 foreign arrivals through its airport, and saw hotel occupancy rise from 51% in 2022 to 58% in 2025 and 72% in the first half of 2026. Registered rooms grew from 5,402 to 6,439 (+1,037) in 2026. CLIC lists 49 properties for sale there, with a median asking price of US$340,000. Sosúa-Cabarete moved from 50–53% occupancy for years to 68.5% in the first half of 2026; CLIC lists 17 properties in Cabarete from US$145,000. Juan Dolio-Boca Chica went from 57% occupancy in 2022 to 60% in 2025 and 72% in the first half of 2026. CLIC lists 106 properties in Juan Dolio (15 of them new developments), with a median of US$270,000 and prices from US$74,000. Price and inventory figures come from CLIC Inmobiliaria's active listings as of July 9, 2026 (median asking prices in USD), while the tourism figures come from MITUR's July 7, 2026 cutoff. This is a market overview and not investment advice.
