The UAE's remote-work visa: who qualifies and how it works

United Arab Emirates · October 1, 2026

The UAE's Virtual Working Programme lets remote employees and freelancers live in Dubai for a year without a local employer. Here's what it actually requires.

The UAE introduced a formal remote-work residency route, commonly called the Virtual Working Programme, allowing people employed by a company outside the UAE — or running their own foreign-registered business — to live legally in the UAE for one year, renewable, without needing a local employer or sponsor. It's one of the more straightforward schemes in the region, and it's a genuinely real, established product rather than an informal workaround.

Who it's for

The programme targets two groups: employees who can show they work remotely for a company based outside the UAE, and self-employed people or business owners who can show a steady income from clients or a business based outside the UAE. It's not aimed at people wanting to work for a UAE-based employer or UAE clients — that's a different, standard employment-visa route.

What you generally need to show

  • Proof of employment (a contract with an employer outside the UAE, commonly one year or more) or ownership of a business outside the UAE for a year or more.
  • Evidence of a minimum monthly income. Sources currently disagree: the federal remote-work track is commonly quoted at US$3,500 a month and Dubai's Virtual Working Programme at US$5,000, and some sources report a January 2026 change to six months of bank statements instead of three. The official government pages could not be checked directly, so treat any figure as indicative and confirm the current threshold with the authority or a licensed visa agent before applying.
  • A passport with sufficient validity (commonly at least six months).
  • Health insurance valid in the UAE.
  • A government fee that sources put at roughly US$287 per person in Dubai, plus insurance, medical test and Emirates ID costs — again, confirm the current amount.

Taxation

This is one of the programme's strongest draws: the UAE levies no personal income tax on salaries or most personal income, regardless of where it's earned, for residents on this visa. That's a real, structural difference from almost every European digital-nomad-visa country, most of which still tax your worldwide income once you become a tax resident there. It doesn't eliminate tax obligations in your home country, though — residents should still check their own country's rules on foreign tax residency and any exit or reporting requirements.

Duration and renewal

The visa is typically granted for one year and can be renewed provided you still meet the eligibility conditions. Sources report that you can sponsor your spouse and children for the same period, with an additional fee per dependant. It doesn't by itself convert into a longer-term residency track the way a Golden Visa does — if long-term UAE residency is the goal, our other UAE articles cover the AED 2 million property-investment Golden Visa route, which is a separate, more permanent pathway.

Connection to property

A one-year renewable remote-work visa doesn't require you to own property, and many remote workers on this visa simply rent. But it does put Dubai property genuinely in reach for people who want a base here without going through the Golden Visa's investment threshold — and for anyone whose income grows or who decides to commit longer-term, the AED 2 million Golden Visa property route becomes a natural next step. FAQ

Do I need a UAE employer to qualify? No — the programme is specifically for people employed by, or running a business based, outside the UAE. How much income do I need? Sources currently quote US$3,500 a month (federal remote-work track) to US$5,000 (Dubai programme), and the figure appears to have been revised recently — confirm the exact current number with the authority before applying. Do I pay UAE income tax? No — the UAE doesn't levy personal income tax on salaries, which is a major practical difference from most nomad-visa countries. Can my family come with me? Sources report that spouse and children can be sponsored for the same period, for an extra fee. Does this visa lead to permanent residency? Not directly — it's a renewable one-year route; the Golden Visa (via a larger property investment or other qualifying routes) is the separate long-term residency path.
